Another airship from the Paramount area is the pic below, drawn by Phil Saunders. Not only unique in design we get Tharks in action. And we kick off with the pic above, a spectacular piece by Ryan Church which I believe was done for the Paramount John Carter of Mars. It's unusual, original, retro and modern at the same time. A PRINCESS OF MARS is the beginning of an odyssey in which John Carter, gentleman from Virginia, embarks on the daring adventure which leads him to the fantastic dying planet of Mars with its multilimbed carnivores, fierce giant green men, weird vege. Last time we took a look at the various concepts of Helium that artists have done for the movies. I think they would have looked more interesting with floatation tanks filled with the 8th ray(If I remember correctly?). I rather liked the hulls of the Stanton ships, since they gave that 'open' feeling needed for the battles and crew as described by Burroughs, but I really wasn't impressed with the feathery solar panels. Oddly enough, I think the Asylum ship is probably quite good, in emulating Jabba's Sail Barge, since that itself was heavily influenced by what a Barsoomian flier would look like. The illustrations weren't always great back then, but it's weird to look back at them and see some of the wild ideas we came up with! Love your stuff, Joe! :-D I'm trying to build up my own portfolio bit-by-bit, and I think I should do some ERB stuff. He excelled at the creature and character look, though. The closest you ever get to seeing a flier is something vague in the background.
Michael Whelan is my favourite Martian Tales cover artist, but I must admit he never did much with the 'technology' so to speak.
